The 7C
Transformative DEI
Change Process
An agile and adaptive roadmap for sustainable DEI integration — explicitly aligned with ISO 30415:2021 and grounded in the principles of generative, continuous change.
A Roadmap for Sustainable DEI Integration
Developed by Effenus Henderson — former Chief Diversity Officer at Weyerhaeuser and Convener of ISO Working Group 8 — the 7C Transformative Change Process provides a holistic, structured approach to embedding DEI as a genuine strategic priority.
"Embedding DEI into the core fabric of an organization is a complex and multifaceted endeavor that requires a comprehensive and structured approach. The 7C process is grounded in the principles of generative change, which emphasize continuous improvement, adaptability, and resilience."
— Effenus Henderson, Global DEI Thought LeaderConsciousness to Choice — The Full Journey
Seven interconnected components, each building on the last. Click any component to explore its purpose, key activities, and ISO 30415 alignment.
Consciousness is the foundation upon which all other elements of the 7C process are built. By raising awareness and recognizing DEI as a strategic priority, organizations create the solid foundation required for meaningful and sustainable change.
- Educate all stakeholders about the value and strategic importance of DEI
- Implement comprehensive leadership education programs
- Communicate clearly why DEI is linked to organizational mission and values
- Identify and address potential challenges and resistance
- Establish DEI as a visible strategic priority from the top
- Build understanding of the potential consequences of inaction
Effective DEI conversations should be structured, with clear objectives, diverse participation, use of data and evidence (including GDEIB and ISO 30415:2021 findings), facilitation of constructive dialogue, and documentation with follow-up actions.
- Create safe spaces for expression and authentic dialogue
- Practice active listening and facilitate open discussions
- Use structured conversation formats with clear objectives
- Integrate data and evidence (GDEIB, ISO 30415) into dialogues
- Seek to understand different worldviews and lived experiences
- Embed regular DEI dialogues into organizational culture
- Document conversations and establish clear follow-up actions
Aligning strategies with context involves setting realistic goals, tailoring initiatives to specific needs and constraints, building necessary capabilities, and continuously monitoring and adjusting efforts in response to changing contextual factors.
- Conduct environmental scanning and SWOT analysis for D&I
- Engage stakeholders across the organization for contextual insight
- Assess organizational capabilities, culture, and readiness for change
- Identify external pressures and socio-political landscape factors
- Align DEI strategies with the identified organizational context
- Set realistic, context-appropriate goals and constraints
- Build the capabilities needed for effective implementation
Regular tracking of progress against goals using data and analytics — monitoring workforce demographics, employee satisfaction scores, and other relevant metrics — is essential. Organizations should be prepared to adjust strategies as needed, ensuring continuous improvement and relevance.
- Conduct employee surveys, focus groups, and exit interview analysis
- Assess current DEI performance and satisfaction levels
- Identify high-impact areas for improvement across the organization
- Develop specific, actionable DEI initiatives
- Establish clear, measurable goals for each initiative
- Align initiative goals with overall organizational strategic objectives
- Track progress regularly using data, analytics, and workforce metrics
Key aspects include forming cross-functional teams, engaging with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), collaborating with external partners, ensuring inclusive decision-making processes, and establishing continuous feedback loops.

Organizations should continuously assess their capacity for change and adjust the cadence as necessary to avoid overwhelming the workforce. The goal is a sustainable rhythm — neither too slow to lose momentum nor too fast to overwhelm commitment.
- Establish clear milestones and timelines for each initiative
- Sequence DEI activities in a logical, manageable order
- Continuously assess organizational capacity for change
- Adjust pace as necessary to avoid workforce overwhelm
- Build regular monitoring and course correction checkpoints
- Balance urgency with sustainability in scheduling
- Integrate DEI cadence into existing organizational planning rhythms
This involves prioritizing initiatives based on impact, urgency, and alignment with organizational goals and resources. Effective change management strategies are crucial to facilitate smooth adoption, including addressing potential resistance, providing support and training, and celebrating achievements to maintain momentum.
